GUNTER PAULI ON PROGRESS OF THE BLUE ECONOMY, NEW ECONOMICS AND LEARNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Co-presented with the Centre for Policy Development

Gunter Pauli is a successful global entrepreneur who saw the need for a network to bring together the many inventors and innovators working independently on sustainable solutions to global problems of pollution and waste. He founded The Global ZERI Network
to share creative and open-source solutions, and then launched the Blue Economy to put ZERI’s philosophy into action by connecting start-up businesses with entrepreneurs.

As an entrepreneur Pauli knows that business innovation is essential. But he also knows that new economic concepts are urgently needed to make global sustainability a reality. Learning for sustainability is equally important, particularly in schools. Gunter
is heavily involved on both fronts; in economics as an advisor to the Bhutanese and other governments; in education with a major project introducing sustainability concepts in schools across Asia.

Gunter will outline progress with all these initiatives around the world since his last visit to Sydney Ideas in 2011, and will explore their relevance for Australia.

Sydney Permablitz co-ordination underway

Uncategorized  Comments Off on Sydney Permablitz co-ordination underway

A new team has been formed to bring the co-ordination of Permablitz events for us based in Sydney. See how it works in Melbourne at http://www.permablitz.net/

In short it provides people and groups operating a Permablitz to promote it beyond there own networks.

The first Sydney Permablitz Collective meeting was attended by seven very enthusiastic people with three apologies in March and a followup meeting has already occurred.

Some nice food was shared then we followed a prepared agenda with additional items added as needed. The meeting was short and to the point with us all leaving with specific tasks to undertake, most of which were completed three days later, and our next agenda is all but written.

It is clear we have a capable and diverse set of people determined to get the network humming. There was general agreement that the meeting proceeded better than most do, we are all committed to the consensus model for proceedings.

A very clear outcome is we value the materials and structure provided by the Melbourne Crew and we have decided to adopt their practices, standards and documentation as a whole. there will be room to modify this as Sydney’s team develops but we see that value in accepting Melbourne’s learning.

After the meeting one member said “Must admit that I’m totally enthused after tonights meeting” and another “Was a bit of a shot in the arm to be in the same room with a bunch of like minded, switched on individuals who are keen to make this happen.”

Everyone left with a smile on their face and an eagerness to return – so meetings will be fortnightly initially to get us on a role.

The Conversation is a great source of qualified information on sustainability and climate change. Celebrate its first year !
Environment + Energy: reflections on our first year
http://theconversation.edu.au/environment-energy-reflections-on-our-first-y…

Environment and energy stories topped the charts as The Conversation’s best-read articles of any section in our first year. Hundreds of thousands of TC readers read and argued about humanity’s often difficult relationship with our planet. This troubled pairing is the genesis of much – if not almost all – of what we are, what we have made, and what we have done.

SOLAR NEWS ALERT
AuSES Celebrates 50th Year

East Solar 2012

PRESS RELEASE

AUSES CELEBRATES 50TH YEAR WITH TWO INDUSTRY CONFERENCES

The Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES) is celebrating its 50th year in 2012 by hosting two key solar industry conferences to showcase how far solar has come in the past 50 years in Australia.

“AuSES is one of the world’s oldest solar energy organisations. Indeed the prestigious International Solar Energy Society was born out of AuSES, and was headquartered in Melbourne for many years,” said John Grimes the Chief Executive of AuSES.

One of the key events this year is the East Solar Expo & Conference to be presented by AuSES and international partner AUPVSEE at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre from the 21-22nd of August. www.eastsolar2012.com

“This event will feature a line-up of expert solar speakers who will chart the rise of solar and its market prospects out to 2020. Best of all it will be a free event, to educate people on the significant contribution solar is already making,” said Grimes.

AuSES is also proud to be running the Solar 2012, the organisation’s 50th anniversary event in early December in Melbourne. This golden jubilee event will showcase solar research, and spotlight real solar projects that are delivering cost effective, emission free electricity.

“Australian inventiveness, and can do attitude has proven decisive in many solar breakthroughs. From the pioneering engineers of the CSIRO who helped develop solar hot water, to the University of New South Wales who regularly set global solar photovoltaic efficacy records.”

“Our universities have trained some of the global solar leaders including executives at Suntech, China Sunenergy, Trina, CSG Solar and Solarfun.”

“We have also seen leading solar companies launched in Australia make it big internationally. Areva Solar (formally Ausra) is an excellent example of this.”

“This is an exciting time as over 1 million Australian homes have solar hot water, and over 500,000 have solar panels. We expect much more to be done in the next three years as the cost of solar falls to record lows with production increases”.

Stop coal seam gas – rally Thursday March 15th

Activism, Events, News  Comments Off on Stop coal seam gas – rally Thursday March 15th
Mar 112012

RALLY Thursday March 15th, from 4pm

Outside NSW State Parliament, Macquarie St, Sydney

Rally when the NSW Parliament debates our 20,000-strong Coal Seam Gas petition demanding:

  • A moratorium on all CSG activity
  • A royal commission into all aspects of CSG
  • A ban on fracking

In recent days CSG company Santos admitted to at least 20 toxic leaks from its wells in the Pilliga (north-west NSW), leaving a “kill zone” of vegetation. Yet the NSW Government has not stopped drilling of a new CSG well 60km southwest of Sydney – in the Warragamba
catchment!

There is now more than enough evidence that CSG mining brings risks.

Yet 5,000 wells are being planned for the state. Areas where 90% of the NSW population live are covered by CSG licenses.

It’s time to stop this dangerous industry before more harm is done.

Our CSG petition is due to be debated at 4:30pm, and CSG campaigners will also pack the gallery inside.

Speakers, banners, placards, “CSG contaminated water”, and much more. Bring your sign,
your shirt, and your voice!

Organised by Stop CSG Sydney, Stop CSG Illawarra, and supported by Lock The Gate Alliance.
